Games For Love, a charity dedicated to creating a sustainable future for children worldwide, is celebrating the inspiring life of Jaime Kathryn Monterde, one of its earliest success stories. Jaime’s journey is a testament to the power of compassion, resilience, and the life-changing support of organizations like Games For Love and its initiative, 1Up LifeBridge.

Jaime’s battle began with a diagnosis of osteosarcoma, an aggressive form of cancer. When her condition became life-threatening, 1Up LifeBridge in partnership with the Helping Hands Ministry in the Philippines, facilitated her access to urgent medical care, leading to a life-saving surgery. Doctors performed an emergency amputation of her leg, a procedure that marked the beginning of Jaime’s fight for survival.

Following her surgery, Jaime faced the daunting challenge of adapting to life without one of her limbs. Games For Love stepped in, sourcing and providing her with the prosthesis that would help her regain mobility and confidence.

“I can’t believe how far I’ve come,” Jaime said, reflecting on her journey. 

It’s been nearly five years, and today Jaime is a cancer survivor, a budding civil engineer, and a decorated athlete. At the 8th Philippine National Para Games in Manila this November, she secured three gold medals in the Women’s Recurve events, including the Mixed Team Event, Qualifying Rounds, and Olympic Rounds. Jaime’s achievements highlight the inclusivity and excellence of the University of Cebu’s Sports Development Office, which fosters talent among athletes of all abilities.
